Mary Cassatt

Mary Cassatt (May 22, 1844 – June 14, 1926) was an American painter who lived most of her life in France. Since women at the time had little to no access to public institutions, they were often "forced" to portray domestic life. Cassatt was particularly close to Edgar Degas.

Rather than sitting "properly" and posing to the viewer, the girl in the painting looks bored and tired, and the room around her is messy, indicating of Cassatt's tendency towards Realism.
