Camille Pissarro

Camille Pissarro (10 July 1830 – 13 November 1903) was born to a Jewish family in St. Thomas (today in the US Virgin Islands) and moved to Paris at the age of 12. He experimented with several styles, among them Pointillism, and was the only one to show at all eight Impressionist exhibitions (1874-1886).

This painting was exhibited at the Salon of 1868 and showcases the Impressionists' tendency to paint outdoors and examine the effects of natural light.

Pissarro was an avid advocate for painting outdoors. The unique composition in this painting of houses blocked by trees is an Impressionist approach to paint exactly what you see.
