Berthe Morisot

Berthe Morisot (January 14, 1841 – March 2, 1895) was one of the only women to show at the official Salon before joining the Impressionists. Similar to Mary Cassatt, she depicted mostly domestic scenes. She was married to Édouard Manet's brother, Eugène Manet.

Bourgeoisie women were excluded from professional institutions and the city's life, symbolized here by the black fence that separates them from the urban landscape in the background.

Being excluded from the city's everyday life, female artists often resorted to domestic scenes. Here, Morisot focuses on motherhood by portraying her sister Edma and her daughter Blanche.
